A Day in the Life of a Front-Line Support Worker

Meet Maria, a front-line support worker in one of SARA’s transition houses. Her role is to create stability in the midst of uncertainty and to walk alongside women as they take their first steps toward safety and independence.

When Maria arrives for her shift, her first priority is to make sure everyone in the house feels secure. She checks the common areas, reviews updates from the previous shift, and greets residents as they begin their day.

A smile and a good morning can set the tone for someone going through a difficult time.

Her day quickly fills with a mix of practical responsibilities and human-centered work - responding to crisis calls, creating safety plans, helping ensure food is well stocked, checking in on appointments, coordinating childcare, managing cleaning duties, and assisting residents in looking for housing opportunities. She provides one-on-one support, offering emotional care when the weight of transition feels overwhelming. Some moments consist of making sure paperwork is complete or arranging transportation to a court date. Others are profoundly human—sitting with a resident who just needs someone to listen.

“It’s the little things—listening, reassuring, showing up—that matter most.”

The challenges are real. Many women arrive carrying trauma and fear, unsure of what comes next. Maria balances the responsibility of supporting their immediate needs while also holding space for their healing. After particularly heavy days, she takes time to reflect and lean on her colleagues for support.

We don’t do this work alone - we carry it together.

What Maria finds most rewarding is watching transformation unfold. She’s seen women arrive anxious and unsure, and over time begin to smile, laugh, and imagine a future that once felt impossible.

She wishes the community could see that “Inside these walls, women are making strides toward independence, safety, and building a life on their own terms.”

“Hope lives here. It may start as a flicker, but it grows stronger with each step forward.”

If Maria had to sum up her role in one word, it would be empowerment.
