People We Serve – Stories of Success

When Maria* and her three children came to SARA for Women, they were escaping years of abuse and profound isolation. The children had been withdrawn from school and peers, leaving them anxious, lonely, and unsure of how to connect with others. Maria, cut off from support and without income, was exhausted and overwhelmed—unsure where to turn or how to rebuild.

With the care and guidance of SARA’s staff, this family began to take courageous steps forward. The children were enrolled in school, where they quickly started to blossom. Friendships formed, laughter returned, and one child even found the confidence to join a sports team. Weekly program activities provided a safe space to grow socially and rediscover joy.

For Maria, the journey was equally transformative. With support, she was able to access income assistance, file taxes, and secure child tax benefits—small but vital steps toward stability. She began counselling and attended parenting classes offered through one of SARA’s community partners. Slowly, her sense of confidence and hope began to return.

“I didn’t know where to start,” Maria shared. “For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”

The road ahead is not without challenges, but today Maria and her children are thriving in ways that once felt impossible. The children are engaged, active, and building bright futures. Maria now feels empowered, equipped with tools, support, and the belief that she and her children deserve safety, opportunity, and a new beginning.

This is the difference your support makes. Together, we are helping women and children move from crisis to confidence—and building pathways to brighter tomorrows.

Please consider giving today to help us empower more women and children on their journey to a brighter future.
