A Full Circle Moment: From Crisis to Celebration

This spring, a powerful moment unfolded at a high school graduation that reminded us why we do this work.

More than nine years ago, Ruth* came to SARA for Women seeking safety and support for herself and her two young children. She was leaving an abusive partner after enduring years of verbal, physical, emotional, and financial abuse. The separation wasn’t easy, especially with the legal challenges she faced. Her ex-partner had the financial means to secure strong legal representation, making the fight for custody and child support deeply overwhelming.

But Ruth persevered.

With the support of SARA’s Multicultural Outreach team, she began to rebuild her life step by step. We helped her navigate the court system, access vital resources, and regain her confidence. She enrolled in training programs, secured employment, and, over time, created a safe, stable life for her children.

This year, at her daughter’s graduation ceremony, Ruth saw a familiar face: the same SARA staff member who had stood by her during her most difficult days.

Overcome with gratitude, she approached the staff member and embraced her. Her children did the same, remembering the kindness and strength their family had received years before. Then, with emotion in her voice, Ruth shared:

“Without SARA, I couldn’t have done this. I have a great job now, and my kids are doing so well in school. My oldest—he was in elementary school when I left—is now in his second year of engineering at UBC.”

“Thank you for empowering me, encouraging my independence, and helping me believe in myself again.”

Stories like Ruth’s remind us that the impact of safety, support, and empowerment can ripple across generations. Her success is a testament to the strength of survivors and the power of community.
